I am reminded of an event that took place in Germany after the end of World War 2. An American military unit was in a German town patrolling the area. They visit one family still living in a house that was partially destroyed. After making sure the family was OK the soldiers left. A private was sad to see people living in that condition. His commanding officer stopped him and made a comment that changed the soldiers’ outlook on things.
The officer stated that inside of what’s left of that house were kids cleaning up; the father was covering up exposed areas outside of the house while the mother was fixing dinner which consisted of flowers placed at the center of the table. This family like all families here in Germany has a clear goal for the future and refuse to let their current conditions interfere with it.
Just like Japan now, companies are still producing, politicians are still working, and everyone is cleaning up and making plans for a better future. Even the temporary housing is way better than many modern houses built today. Japan today has rediscovered the same spirit that the German and Japanese people had after WW2.
