Never Trust A Cricketer

Come all ye fair young maidens and harken unto me,

Never trust a cricketer, whoever he may be.

Rowdier than a sailor who's been six months at sea,

Never let a cricketer's hand an inch above your knee.

First let's take the pace man, pure speed from first to last!

My darlings do be careful; his balls are hard and fast.

Then there's the medium pacer, his balls swing either way; 

He's really most persistent and can keep it up all day!

And watch for the off-spinner, girls, another awkward chap.

If you leave him half an opening, he will slip one through the gap!

Then there's the wily 'slow', pure cunning is his strength;

He'll tempt you, then he'll trap you with his very subtle length.

So ladies, do be careful, your mothers would agree.

Never trust a cricketer, whoever he may be.

And what about the opening bat, his struggles never cease!

He has only one ambition, to spend all day at the crease.

The number three is a dasher, he seldom prods and pokes.

When he goes into action, he has a fine array of strokes..

And do beware the slogger, not content with one or two;

When he arrives at the crease then only six will do.

Then there's the real stonewaller girls, he knows what he's about;

And if you let him settle in, it's hard to get him out!

We come now to the last man, I hope this will not shock,

He doesn't mind if he's last man in, as long as he gets a knock.

So, darlings, do be careful, and be well warned by me:

Never trust a cricketer, whoever he may be.

And watch the wicket-keeper, girls, he's full of flair and dash;

And if you raise your heel, he'll whip them off in a flash.

If you take the field with the captain, you had better know the score;

Or he'll have you in positions that you never knew before!

The cricket commentator is a nasty sort of bloke,

He watches all the action and describes it stroke by stroke.

Even the kindly umpire, who looks friendly as a pup;

You'll quickly find you've had it, when he puts his finger up!

So, darlings, please remember and repeat it after me:

Crying For All the Wrong Reasons

So UNC is out of the 2013 NCAA tournament 

and is under Federal Investigation; again.

• Rapes and sexual assaults not being reported to local law enforcement
• UNC Honor Court attacking rape victims
• Improperly accepting gifts from sports agents
• Lying to federal investigators about receiving travel accommodations and jewelry
• Teachers giving passing grades to nonexistent classes
• Unauthorized grade changes
• Fraudulent classes
• Academic fraud
• Tutor writing term papers for players
• Players and tutor taking money from sports agent not authorized to do business in the state
• Assistant coach working as a middle man between sports agents and players
• For showing the world that sports comes before academics and student safety.

Just remember to look on the bright side of life

As in the past few years, there's always hope for next year

Why Americans Hate Soccer

Sports, is the reenactment of war. The major difference is that afterwards the participants can go home without the smell of death all over them. Although the jury is still out on a few players and coaching staff connected with the New Orleans Saints.

Here in America we love sports on all levels from professional to College to High School. Football, baseball, basketball and NASCAR still reign supreme. There are other major sporting events going on as well and are entertaining to watch. The main reason they are so popular is the players give everything they have to play at their best, to win with honor and dignity.

And then there’s Soccer. A sport made up of marathon runners with hard heads and the ability to date and marry gorgeous women for as long as their careers hold out. That last part does tend to describe all other persons of interest in other fields of sports.

But what soccer lacks when compared to other forms of sporting events is the honesty of fair play. Many Soccer players fake injuries as if they have nothing better else to do. Soccer players would rather resort to lying in the effort to remove an opponent from the field.

That alone is what is really keeping Americans from embracing the world of soccer. If a European soccer player really wants to cry over a fake injury, you can be sure than an American player will make an honest man out of him the next time they meet on the field of battle.

Win or loss it was a very interesting year for the unexpected teams to win or lose this season. Hopefully UNC will make it back to the NCAA but no matter the out-come, Duke Blue Devils are the 2010 Champions.

College Basketball in North Carolina

Every country, for that part each area of a country, has its own sports attraction. As one travels to what is called ‘The South’ will encounter a decoration of Colleges and Universities attire on one’s personnel vehicle, homes, mailbox and on any given Saturday even exposed body area’s up to and including their pets as well. In one area of North Carolina lie 3 such Universities within a few miles of each other. Called the Triangle these lines connect N.C. State University in Raleigh, Duke University in Durham and University of NC in Chapel Hill.

Whenever any of these three teams play against each other has over the years become a local holiday where nearly all radio’s, TV and cell phones are tuned into the game. Bets are wages and rivalries going decades back are brought out with stories of classic game plays are retold 1,000 times over. It matters not what the teams overall standings are. Their ranking, wins/loses or even who is on the team means very little when two of these three teams face each other. Even when Michael Jordon played for UNC he had to play extra hard against Duke and N.C. State.

Many years ago I use to work for a grocery store in Zebulon. And every weekend the manager would setup the radio to broadcast the game over the intercom system. It was a service to all the employees, the customers and the perfect sells gimmick for during those games, that grocery store were full of customers shopping away while enjoying the play by play call of the game. It was truly busy during the half time part of the game as customers quickly paid for their items so they could return home to see the rest of the game while those watching the game ran to the store to stock up on more food and drinks.

A look at what was important to the people was broadcast on the radio sometimes in the early 80’s. The announcer said that the three most important thinks for a person and family are religion, college sports and NASCAR. People from other countries would scream for Soccer, Hockey, Sumo, Wrestling or even Horse Racing which is all important but for those living in ‘The South’ will follow college sports and NASCAR first before even looking towards other professional sports such as Baseball and Football. One of the best reasons is the beginning points of them.

With College sports you have young people who are playing for the love of the game. Sure they want to eventually play on a professional team but for now they are perfecting their skills and abilities. Getting use to playing in front of large crowds and being cheered and booed by fans and abstractors. They are still doing their school work to keep their grades up while using all their spare time to practice for upcoming games. No pay, no commercial endorsements and no free passes in the classroom. These players are donating what little free time they have to participate in an extra curricular activity. Even NASCAR started out as a poor mans sport to which the people who made it a sport cannot afford to attend anymore.

Look closely at professional sports players you see people playing for money and glory with little worry about breaking the law even showing respect. Years ago one player in California chocked his coach, many players continue taking questionable drugs, multiple affairs and illegal gambling with sports and animals. People who have forgotten where, how and whom helped their career to began. Unless it involves publicity stunt to either increase their popularity or to make people forget their mistakes.

Back around the mid 90’s I was in Hayward, California. I had a friend who was originally from the Northern part of England. One day a few of his friends who were mainly from other parts of England and Europe were together having a very energetic conversation. He saw me and asked me over to ask me what I thought was a rather strange question. He wanted to know how I thought about America defeating Germany three games in a row in Soccer. Without even thinking I made the statement ‘We have a Soccer team? High School or College?’ The next thing I experienced was one German man started speaking in German and it didn’t sound like he was too happy.

I was totally unaware that America had a professional soccer team. Needless to say I became aware that soccer games are not held every four years. I became more aware of other countries sports customs and to not only respect those traditions but to clearly see that those traditions in other counties, even different sports cultural areas inside America, mirror every other part of the world’s sports traditions. I saw a few Europeans cheering away for their favorite home team that day just as people here do for their home team. In a way, everyone in the world is more alike than we really realize.
