In my job I visit a variety of grocery and department
stores. On a daily basis I have encountered many people who park their vehicle illegally
in the fire lanes located in the front of these stores. They would either go
inside to do their shopping or wait in the car. In either case, the vehicle is
at times so close to the entrance that people going in and out of the place
have to walk around said vehicle.
My proposal is this. Raise the parking fine to $500 for the first three months before raising it to $750. Have
police officers working in plain clothes stationed at different places each day.
As people illegally park their vehicle, the officer would write out the parking
ticket and leave it with the unattended vehicle or the driver, if present.
In the first few weeks, the local police department could
collect thousands of dollars to begin expanding the program to cover more
stores and businesses where people continue to block access for fire trucks and
ambulances to use in emergencies.
