Food for Thought

I found this while surfing last night. Link here.

Here's a sample.

Minute Maid Apple Juice vs. Dunkin Donuts:
One 15.2 fl oz bottle of Minute Maid Apple Juice has 52 grams of sugar, the same amount of sugar in about 25 Dunkin Donut sugared munchkins.

Hi-C Poppin’ Lemonade vs. Krispy Kreme:
One 6.75 fl oz juice box of Hi-C Poppin’ Lemonade has 26 grams of sugar. In such a tiny kid-sized box it has 7 grams more sugar than a Krispy Kreme chocolate iced custard filled donut.

Minute Maid Orange Juice vs. Fruit Loops:
The sugar in one 15.2 fl oz bottle of Minute Maid Orange juice is equivalent to 4 cups of Kellogg’s Fruit Loops (48g).

Sobe Citrus Energy vs. Pixy Stixs:
You could eat about 29 sugar-filled straws of Pixy Stixs for the same amount of sugar in one 20 fl oz Sobe Citrus Energy drink (63g- about 12 ½ teaspoons).

Tropicana Twister Orange Strawberry Banana Burst vs. Tootsie Rolls:
One 20 fl oz bottle of Tropicana Twister has 64 grams of sugar, just about as much sugar as 21 Tootsie Roll candies.

Shopping at Kroger Grocery Store

One of the joys I have where I work at is knowing all the great sales that are taking place. Kroger grocery store does a lot of Mega Sales. Buy 10 items and they reduce the price by half if you use their free rewards card. And as I had $1 off coupons for the soda I planned to buy, I was able to get the best deal imaginable.

Ten 2 liters bottles of Schweppes Ginger Ale soda for only $1.27.

Death In The Family

Kazuko Fukuhara
Saturday night was a long night for us. My wife’s mother Kazuko, who lives in Okinawa, has been going to the hospital for Dialysis treatment. Recently the Doctor found blood in her stool and urine. In order to fix that problem she would have to stop her dialysis treatment. The Doctor was doing his best but with her age and health, it was only a matter of time.

She slept a lot. Her hearing was starting to go. Family, Doctor and Nurses had to talk real loud so she could hear them. She would barely eat anything. My sister-in-law Sonoko and a few other relatives were constantly by her side.

On Saturday night, our time, she woke up very suddenly. She wanted to talk to my wife Mika and so Sonoko called us from her cell phone. With both phones on speaker mode we were giving words of encouragements to her. Due to Kazuko’s hearing problem my two boys were yelling “I Love You” into the phone. The entire room at the hospital was filled with the sound of two boys cheering up their grandmother.

She was very weak but she acknowledged that she heard us. We said goodbye to Sonoko thinking that Kazuko would rest for the rest of the day. We were wrong. Two minutes later Sonoko called again. Seconds after Sonoko got off the phone with us, Kazuko smiled and passed away on August 18, 2012 11:31 AM Japan Time.  (August 17, 2012 10:31 PM Eastern Standard Time) She was 81 years old.

She lived through the Battle of Okinawa during World War Two. As all forms of records and identification were destroyed in the war, she was mistakenly giving a different date of birth as many forms were quickly being filled out after the war. She remembers Okinawa being transformed from a barren wasteland, due to the war, to having huge metropolitan cities all over the island.

Invasion of the Mushrooms

My yard is being covered in mushrooms Nothing like Invasion of the Body Snatchers but just enough for my wife to have salad every night for a week or three. They are popping up around the air conditioner, the house, along the edge of the woods and under my van if it sits more than a few days. Apparently I’m not alone in this. One house in Wendell, NC has crop circles of mushrooms growing in their front yard. Even the local McDonald's have them growing them around the light poles.

Pizza Hut Hershey's Chocolate Dunkers

Recently one of my sons was bugging me to get a garlic bread pizza from Pizza Hut. And as I was working one Friday near a Pizza Hut I stopped in and ordered it for him. On a whim, I also ordered the Hershey’s Chocolate Dunkers. Thinking that it would be interesting to eat and enjoy. I ordered 2 of them and after picking up my order, I headed home.

After a very long ride home as the car was filled with the smell of chocolate and pizza, I produced to an awaiting family that night’s dinner with dessert. It was during eating these chocolate dunkers that my youngest son really took a liking to them. He was consuming them like a fish to water. I had two pieces and did everyone else. But my youngest son ate the rest of them.

His mouth was covered with chocolate as it was dipping down his face. By the next day he was begging for more of these. Can’t blame him because I want more of them as well.
